Mass Timber in Mid-Rise Apartments | Early 2026 TBC

As governments across Australia work to address housing shortages and improve housing affordability, mid-rise apartments are emerging as a key typology for delivering high-quality, liveable homes at scale.
Yet these projects now face powerful cost pressures—post-COVID construction escalation, persistent labour shortages, and a return to normalised lending rates. These forces combine to create a delivery environment where conventional concrete solutions increasingly struggle to meet feasibility thresholds.
Mass timber construction offers a new pathway. With the right design approach, timber can materially reduce project cost, accelerate program, and deliver healthier, more sustainable homes without compromising performance.
The session introduces real-world products, procurement models, and construction techniques that compress program durations and ensure forecast value improvements are actually realised on site.
Topics Covered
Mass Timber Structural Systems
Designing and planning optimised mass timber primary structural systems that integrate with current requirements such as the Better Apartments Design Standards (Victoria) / SEPP 65 & ADG (NSW) and the Liveable Housing Design Standard now embedded in NCC 2022.
Façade, Acoustic and Fire Design Strategies
Pairing mass timber with compliant and cost-efficient façade systems, achieving acoustic performance without overbuild, and navigating NCC fire requirements with contemporary timber-specific approaches.
Project Delivery and Risk Management
Procurement pathways, supply-chain structures, and delivery frameworks that reduce risk for builders and clients, improve cost certainty, and streamline approvals and coordination.

Introduction to Mass Timber | Starting Early 2026

Available on request - for architects, builders, developers, and all professionals keen to learn about mass timber.
The Introduction to Mass Timber Seminar is a tailored, small-group session designed to give project teams a clear, practical understanding of modern mass timber construction. Delivered in the Mass Timber Design Hub, the seminar combines technical fundamentals, real world insights and hands-on engagement with elements such as CLT, glulam, acoustic, fire and façade assemblies.
Organisations can book a private session for up to 8 participants, ensuring focused discussion, role-specific guidance, and the opportunity to explore how mass timber applies directly to their projects and sectors. Sessions are delivered by Vistek’s specialist timber engineering team and include CPD eligibility for architects.
Whether your team is looking to upskill, evaluate timber for an upcoming project, or build a shared baseline of understanding across disciplines, this seminar provides a clear and practical foundation.
Topics Covered Include:
Overview of CLT, glulam and LVL and how they are manufactured.
Common structural systems: post-and-beam, panelised floors/walls, hybrids
Early design requirements: grids, tolerances, penetrations and services
Fire and acoustic considerations.
Digital coordination and the process from design to delivery.
DfMA principles, logistics, construction sequencing and installation methods.
Program and cost benefits and how they are realised.
Procurement pathways, cost drivers and risk management.
