The project team
The Vistek team were lucky enough to get a tour around this Union St CLT house recently. This unique house is located in Brunswick. The community-minded family home was designed by Austin Maynard Architects, with structural and civil engineering by Vistek. It was expertly built by CBD Contracting. It reached completion in September.
The materials
The design team’s careful choice of materials characterized the project. The build maintained the existing brick facade but juxtaposes this with a modern glazed extension. Beyond the facade the team has made extensive alterations and additions. These were built out of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). CLT is a highly versatile and sustainable material. CLT was an apt choice for the site, not just for its attractive appearance. It was also simple to install in the relatively narrow space. Moreover, it caused minimal noise disruption to the neighbourhood.
The design
Austin Maynard Architects, together with the clients and project team, have created a beautiful and inventive home. For instance, their design pairs the clean lines of the natural wood with fun elements such as the popping blue bathroom. A skate ramp hidden in the basement is perhaps the most noteworthy innovation. Amazingly, the ramp doubles as a slide from the basement to the lounge. (Unfortunately, we didn’t get a go). All in all, the design has a very high level of attention to detail. We can see that this will make the Union St CLT house an incredible place to live. We wish the family all the best in their new home.
