Oakleigh Childcare Centre
The Oakleigh South Childcare Centre by Atelier Projects & Insite Architects provides an example of how well CLT and mass timber fit with the needs of education projects.
The CLT structure went up in just eleven days. During construction there was near zero waste on site. The builders could keep noise levels down to the sound of drilling into timber. This shows how mass timber can deliver projects without interrupting the local environment. The lightweight nature of CLT minimised foundation works, further reducing environmental impact. The Master Builders Association of Victoria recognised this by awarding the construction Best Sustainable Project of 2018.
Equally as important, the design kept the CLT walls just lightly stained, with a natural timber aesthetic. This leads to a calming biophilic interior, a space ideal for the development of the young students.
